At the outset it may appear absurd to be concerned with Non-Renewable Energy when talking of Green Energy. It is to be remembered that Green Energy is in fact any form of energy use and conversion which results in a non toxic environment. With the difficulties that we face in our current day energy requirements, advancements in technology have been made in non-renewable energy conversion technology. The advantages of using coal are that in some countries due to the abundant occurrence of this resource, it is cheap to use it for their energy requirements. It is also because the technology to use it is well established and is therefore less expensive than some other technologies. The only downside is that the by products produced during its use as fuel, does cause serious damage to the environment by increasing green-house gas pollutants. So the technology to extract and use coal in such a way that the pollutants can be trapped effectively and cheaply and there by reducing emissions. It is a good way to go till we achieve competitive and low-cost renewables.
CO2 storage using magnesium oxide nano-crystals Berkeley Lab researchers have produced non-toxic magnesium oxide nanocrystals that efficiently emit blue light and could also play a role in long-term storage of carbon dioxide, a potential means of tempering the effects of global warming.
FutureGen, developers of a $1.5 billion experimental low-pollution power plant said they are ready to announce whether it will be built in Illinois or Texas, despite an unexpected letter from their federal partner advising them to slow down. FutureGen's developers say the coal-fired plant would emit almost no carbon dioxide, trapping the greenhouse gas and storing it underground. The plant is intended to be a prototype, experimenting with the technology so it can be used in future power plants.
Nevada's Coal Power
"I'd put my money on the Sun
and Solar energy. What a source of power! I hope we don't have to wait until oil
and coal run out before we tackle that" - Thomas Edison
1847-1931
